The best way to travel Thailand is with your own vehicle. If you like to explore more remote areas, if you like to be more independent or if you are a small group, having your own vehicle can be very convenient in many occasion. There are International companies like Avis, Hertz and Budget who offer a Car or Minibus rental service full insured. You can pick up your vehicle in one city and give it back in another. The gasoline in Thailand it is less than half price compare to Europe and most of all, there is very little traffic ( except Bangkok and surrounding ).
Driving in Thailand can be a pleasure for people who come from a country where the traffic is heavy, in fact outside the cities there are few cars. All the main roads which connect the cities have 2 lane road per direction, near Bangkok also 3 or 4 lanes. Travel in the day time is much safer than in the night because there are not so many trucks.
The traffic direction in Thailand is on the left side of the road ( same as UK or Australia and opposite than the rest of Europe and USA ); most of the people get used to drive on the left hand of the road withing short time practice. It is important to get an International driving license in your country before leaving.
In Thailand all the signs of the main roads are written either in Thai and English, secondary road have also signs written only in Thai language. Important to get a Thailand Map before you start your trip or you can buy one at Bangkok Airport. The maps are not sold everywhere as in the West. You can find them only in some large book shop, department stores ( Tesco Lotus, Big C, Makro ), airports and main touristic areas, so if you find one just buy it !!
The speed limit in all Thai Highway is 90 Km/h, but you will see many cars running at 100/120 km/h. If you pass the speed limit you could get a fine. Seat belt it is also obligatory for the front passengers.
